Woman arrested over self-kidnap, 2.65m ransom recovered

Mbarara.Police in Mbarara is holding a 45-year-old woman Meron Nabasa a resident of Kaberebere in Isingiro District for kidnapping herself and later demanded a ransom of 3m from the brothers.

Nabasa was arrested together with her friend whom they connived and made a concoction to threaten the brothers for a ransom after making a call to them by the friend called Beatrice Kyomuhangi who was also arrested by police too. Kyomuhangi a shopkeeper in Katete where they were handling their deal from with Nabasa.

Kyomuhangi got up her mobile phone and called one of Nabasa’s brothers Martin Kakuru threatening to kill Nabasa once they fail to send the ransom of 3m.

This forced the brothers to team up and contribute the 3m cash and sent it through Moble Money immediately.  After sending the money they further reported a case at Isingiro police station and at Rwizi Regional Police Station at case No.SD13/23/4/2018 where investigations into the matter started. The suspects after the arrest they were found with only 2.65m as the remaining balance of 3m ransom cash that was sent.

After the arrest through tracking by Flying squad the two were brought to Rwizi Regional Police office Mbarara where they were interrogated and Nabasa confessed that she connived with Kyomuhangi and asked money from the brothers. She claimed that she got a loan which she failed to pay back and lacked schools fees for her children. Meron Nabasa had a loan balance of Ug Shs 1,899,000, school fees balance of 858,600 for her child at Kashaka Girls in Mbararara.

Before she was arrested she talked to her brothers through the Mobile phone claiming that she was kidnapped and damped in Lyantonde.

Regional Police Public Relations Officer Samson Kasasira confirmed the arrest of the suspects during the press conference on Tuesday. Kasasira warned the public to desist this from this new trend of crime.

Kasasira also told the Journalists that the two will be taken to the court soon for prosecution.
