Mbarara has been launched as a City this Friday by Hon. Rafael Magyezi, Minister of Local Government at a colorful ceremony held at Lake View Hotel where interim mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi was installed and handed instruments of power.
While addressing the congregation during the launch of Mbarara City at Lake View Hotel Mbarara this Friday, Magyezi told the Kakyebezi the interim City Mayor that from this day he has been inaugurated, he should never get attempted to selloff, hire or lease any land and all other properties belonging to the city during this period he will be serving on interim.
Mbarara City soon will soon shift from the former municipal council premises (white house) to Mbarara District Headquarters premises soon after the Mbarara District shifts Headquarters shifts to Kashari County Head Quarters in Bwizibwera.
Magyezi further warned on endless political conflicts to instead leaders should concentrate on development of the new city as there are challenges ahead that require a united force.
Minister all also warned on corruption scandals that characterized Mbarara Municipal council. It should be recalled that there were various scandals that led Nakalema’s team arresting a number of Municipal council civil servants that were interdicted and later charged before Anti-Corruption court in Kampala.
The stone of the launched city was laid at the former municipal council Headquarters currently the City Headquarters.
Minister also guided that conflicts among divisions over who should take the division Headquarters must also stop. He therefore guided that the headquarters for Mbarara City North division be put at Kakika Division while for Mbarara City South be put at Nyamitanga Division.
Michael Tusiime, the current Member of Parliament in his speech also warned on the conflicts within Mbarara must stop now if they want maintain and develop Mbarara City.
Mayor Kakyebezi also asked councilors to stop fighting him over simple matters that as politicians must come on board and work together in this short interim period for the good of the city
The ceremony was graced by Bishops Lambert Bainomugisha, Sheldon Mwesigye, Mbarara District Khadi Abdullah Muhammad Mukwaya and other political leaders.
