Lawyer drags Mbarara District Executive and Council to court demanding 21m

Mbarara. All is not well at Kamukukuzi as Mbarara District Executive Committee and the Council after one of top Lawyers in Mbarara town sued them demanding payment over 21m.

This came to attention last week in a council meeting held at Kamukuzi district headquarters where one of the Councilors Asaph Muhangi raised a motion seeking the council resolution to pay Lawyer Daudi Barinda 21m which he demands Mbarara District Council. This money according to Muhangi was legal fees when Barinda handled a case between Executive and Council.

The case arose in 2017 when a section of councilors petitioned the Speaker of Parliament Rabecca Kadaga over misunderstandings that were between Council and Members of Executive.

When councilors petitioned the Speaker accusing the Executive led by the District chairman, they hired a private Lawyer Barinda who later brought both parties on board for mediation, and the matters were settled instantly.

When the District failed to pay for his legal services, he dragged the District Executive Committee, 17 councilors, District Chairman, CAO Cuthbert Eseku among others.

Chairman JB Bamuturaki Tumusiime at Kamukuzi in his Office

During the last council meeting, District Chairman JB Bamuturaki Tumusiime trashed off the motion of paying Barinda that there is no reason of paying 21m to the private Lawyer, because after all he was not employed by Local Government or by district to handle that case, “there is no money to pay that Lawyer and I wonder where 21m came from yet I remember in the time engagement meeting, it was just 2m only” JB Bamuturaki said.

Among the councilors who spearheaded in writing the petition to the speaker of parliament include; Asaph Muhangi, Mark Mugisha, and Julius Byekwaso.
