Kakyebezi Bounces back as Mbarara City Mayor

Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, the NRM flag-bearer has bounced back as Mayor for Mbarara Cityafter defeating five other rivals on Wednesday.

Kakyebezi who has been interim Mayor since July last year when Mbarara was elevated to the city status, won with 23,557 total votes cast.

He was declared the winner by Mbarara City returning officer, Violet Atuhurira.

Kakyebezi’s main political nemesis, Staley Tugume Katembeyi (Forum for Democratic Change) got 6,068 votes (18.95%), Albert Akatukunda, a deejay in Mbarara town and independent candidate bagged 1,162 votes, while Peter Mpaka from National Unity Platform (NUP) 786 votes and Norman Vincent Mugarura (Alliance for National Transformation) got 313 votes while Apollo Kibira and independent candidate secured 258 votes.

Kakyebezi who was in a jovial mood, attributed his success to working closely with people and being down to earth and approachable.

“I serve all people regardless of their political affiliations or any other beliefs. People want a leader who has time for them and listens to their needs. I have respect for those who are trying to develop themselves and they are the ones who vote, compared to the rich who have no time,” he said.

Kakyebezi pledged to reconcile with his political opponents and listen to their views to enable him focus on the development of the town. “I will work with all stakeholders for the better planning and development of town. I have to bring my opponent’s closer to me because they had their manifestos which we can incorporate them into mine and have a shining city,” Kakyebezi added.

He also promised to improve health standards of the city, focusing on good sanitation and hygiene, improve the road network, fight corruption and improve education services.

Kakyebezi called on Mbarara residents to comply with the city guidelines and focus on physical planning of the city, saying they will not allow illegal constructions.

He assure land owners that his office will ensure that processing of the construction plans is done quickly.

Salongo Tumukunde, a businessman in Mbarara, said Kakyebezi deserved to win because he is pro people regardless of one’s status. “He is is a focused person and good at lobbying when it comes to development. We shall support and guide him,” Tumukunde added.
