The Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana who is leading a team of 18 State Attorneys has today found a hard time justifying the decision by Parliament to extend their term of office from 5 to 7 years.
Rukutana was speaking as the first respondent before a panel of five judges hearing the age limit petitions in the Constitutional court sitting in Mbale.
According to Rukutana, this decision was reached after the people of Uganda through consultations instructed their representatives to extend the term of Parliament from 5 to 7 years.
“My Lords, Chapter 18 provides for areas, articles and circumstances under which the provisions of this constitution can be amended …, ” Deputy AG Rukutana argued
However, before he could finish his explanation, Justice Kenneth Kakuru reigned in arguing that reason for the extension was some MPs had never been to Kampala so they needed to know the steps before Deputy Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo added that some even needed to learn how to use forks.
Today was the 4th day of the hearing of these petitions in which petitioners argue that the process of amending the constitution to remove the age limit was illegal
