DFCU Bank Staff dies giving birth at Case Hospital

The family of DFCU Bank employee Hellen Tebyasa Kamukama has blamed her death on ‘negligence’ of doctors at Buganda Road based Case Clinic. Kamukama was pronounced dead three hours after she entered the theater for caesarean operation, but the doctors were able to save her child.

At a press conference, Kamukama’s father, Eng. Dr. Steven Tebyasa, said the doctors at the hospital were responsible for his daughter’s death. “My daughter died whileshe was giving birth and that hospital should take responsibility. The doctors who operated on her were negligent and did not give her much enough attention she deserved,” Tebyasa alleged.

Tebyasa noted that even thogh they received a postmortem report which indicated his daughter died of cardiac arrest, they could not rule out possibility that her case was mishandled during the operation, prompting heart attack. Kamukama’s friend said their biggest fear was that the hospital might have administered high doses of anesthesia before the operation, prompting the heart attack. He said it could also be possible that during the operation, they might have raptured some of her internal organs. However, the postmortem carried out rules out any injuries to her internal organs.

While addressing mourners at St. Noah Serwanga Wampewo Church of Uganda in Kasangati, Waakiso, Kamukama’s friend Dan Lumonya said, “A doctor friend told me something was not right in that particular operation,” Lumonya said.

What happened

The hospital management admitted that Kamukama was their patient and that they were planning to meet her family members and explain what actually transpired. The hospital noted that Kamukama was a first time mother who had earlier undergone an operation from a different hospital for a treatment of ailment they did not want to disclose. A senior doctor who spoke to us on condition of anonymity said Kamukama was asthmatic and it was possible that she might have suffered the attack during surgery.

Apparently, Kamukama was taken to the theater and the cesarean operation started at around 9 am “We were able to deliver a live baby boy by Cesarean and even showed it to the mother and then the operation to stitch the wound started when she was alive. After the repair was done, the heart immediately stopped beating for reasons we cannot explain”
