Police in Bunyangabu district on Monday arrested the district chairperson, James Ategeka Mugarama,
for slapping the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Jane Asiimwe.
Asiimwe said that he approached Mugarama and asked him to hand over the government vehicle so
that it is used during the sensitisation of people regarding the coronavirus.
“I wanted him to hand over the Government vehicle so I use it to sensitise people on the coronavirus
as directed by President Yoweri Museveni, but he physically assaulted me,” Asiimwe said.
Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori west regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of Mugarma on
“We have arrested Mugarama and he has recorded a statement regarding what transpired at the
District headquarters on Monday,” Twesige said.
It is alleged that Mugarama, who is also a member of the district security committee which is chaired
by Asiimwe, has been mobilising people to continue with their work normally.
According to sources in Bunyangabu, Mugarama had never attended any of the meetings called by
the district coordination committee chaired by the district. The district chairman raised eyebows on
Sunday when he started to use the government car to mobilise residents to continue working normally
in defiance of the guidelines issued by the President and health ministry.
