Bubaare Water Project Substandard-Minister Atwooki

The State Minister for Economic monitoring in the office of the president, Dr. Kasirivu Atwooki Kyamanywa raises concern over a fake water project in Mbarara district done by Ministry of Water and Environment recently.

The minister, who was on a two-day tour in Mbarara district, discovered that the Water ministry commissioned the piped water project meant to supply clean water to 500 households in Bubaare Sub County, Mbarara District but residents say they have never drawn water as taps ran dry since commissioning of the project last year.

The project was funded by the European Union to a tune of Shs. 2.4 billion.

Minister Atwooki blamed the technical team and contractor who did the survey and allocated the water pump stations in wrong areas and gave a directive that the works be redone before he institutes a commission of inquiry to investigate and expose the possible collusion between staff of Ministry of Water and environement Officers and the contractor. The ministry has regional offices in Mbarara town

He noted that the little water that would be available is consumed by the large eucalyptus plantations neighboring the water source.

The minister expresses displeasure that residents still get their water from wells and dams yet government sunk Shs 2.4billion in the project to save them from this and the intention of government was not achieved.
