Authorities together with the police in Buhweju district have arrested three people for encroaching on Kirungu wetland.
The arrested are Simon Baguma (42) the Kyesika village chairman and Jumaine Kilibenda (57) both from Karungu sub-county. The other one is Vereriano Bagumire (66) from Akarukoma village in Rwengwe sub-county Buhweju district.
Ben Nuwamanya the district police commander Buhweju says the three were arrested while grazing their cattle in the wetland during an operation that was carried out on Monday night.
Celemesia Birungi the Buhweju district environmental officer says they have been giving out several notices to the suspects but they had kept a deaf ear.
Birungi warns all those who are encroaching on wetlands to find other ways of survival noting that the operation is still on until all the wetland encroachers are arrested.
The other wetlands which have been encroached on in Buhweju district include Kyenjogyera and Kanyabukanja which are both major water catchment areas for River Rwizi.
