Originally, the present day Ankole was Nkore. The word Ankole has its roots in the English Colonialist’s mispronunciation of the word ‘Nkore’.
Others believe the word Ankole was introduced by British colonial administrators to describe the new kingdom which had lost Mahogora, Kabura, Buraga, Kibumbiro & Kitagwenda and gained Igara, Buhweju, Bunyaruguruand some parts of Mpororo. They reasoned that the change in boundaries of this Kingdom required a new a name hence adding an 'A' at the begining to be ankole.
